How To Make Cannabutter With CBD Flower
Posted on June 22 2022,
What is cannabutter?
If you're looking to infuse your food with the benefits of CBD, cannabutter is one of the simplest and most common ways to do it. Butter is an ideal medium for CBD infusion because it's delicious, easy to use, and CBD needs to bind to fat molecules, which are abundant in butter. Plus, making cannabutter is pretty straightforward: you just need some butter, some farm to bottle CBD Flower, and a little time. So if you're feeling ambitious in the kitchen and want to try your hand at making edibles, cannabutter is a great place to start.
Thankfully, the process is relatively simple and only takes a few hours. Once you've made your cannabutter, you can use it in all sorts of recipes, from brownies to cookies to savory dishes. And because you will be using CBD flower, you won't have to worry about getting high. So whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, this recipe will show you how to make cannabutter that's perfect to add into any recipe.
How to make cannabutter with CBD flower
Once you infuse the butter with CBD flower, you can then use that cannabutter to make any recipes that call for butter! People commonly make cannabutter to make baked goods like brownies, cookies, and cakes.
The most important step in preparation for cannabutter is decarboxylation. This process slowly heats the CBD flower and converts cannabinoid CBDA into CBD by activating cannabinoids. To decarboxylate CBD flower, you will have to heat the flowers at a low temperature in an oven before adding it into butter. If you skip this step, you will be left with a cannabutter that has little to no CBD effects.
You will need:
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- Saucepan, stock pot, double-boiler, or slow cooker
- Mesh strainer or cheesecloth
- Container for cannabutter
- Cannabis grinder (optional)
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup water
- 4-5 grams ground CBD Flower, decarboxylated
1. Grind or break up the CBD flower.
Grinders will break the CBD flower down to small even peices and is a faster proccess, however you can also just break up the CBD flower with your hands. You will want to keep the ground up pieces small, but large enough that they don't go through the cheese cloth or mesh strainer.
2. Decarb the CBD flower.
Preheat the oven to 245ºF. Cover the baking sheet with parchment paper and place the ground up cannabis on it. Heat in the oven for 30-40 minutes. Every 10 minutes mix the ground up flower around to expose all sides.
3. Melt the butter.
On low heat, melt 1 stick of butter in a saucepan
Add 1/2 cup of water, which will help regulate temperature and prevent the butter from scorching.
4. Add the decarboxylated CBD flower.
After the butter is fully melted, add in the decarbed CBD flower.
5. Let Simmer.
Simmer on low heat, between 160-200ºF; don’t exceed 200ºF or you may burn out the cannabinoids. Simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. The mixture should never come to a full boil.
6. Strain the mixture.
Place a mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a bowl and pour the butter/CBD mixture through it. Compost the plant material.
Place the bowl of butter in the fridge, and let it solidify overnight. If excess water forms at the bottom of the jar, remove the solid butter with a knife and drain out the water.
How to calculate the potency for cannabutter
Take the percentage of CBD from the label and multiply by 1000. That will tell you how many milligrams of CBD is in each gram of flower.
For example if your CBD flower has 10% CBD you would use this equation:
(0.10 X 1000 = 100mg of CBD / Gram of flower.
There are 8 tablespoons in 1 stick of butter. If you want each tablespoon to have 50mg CBD, you will need 400mg of CBD in the whole stick of butter. In this scenario, you would add about 4 Grams of CBD.
